Book Review: Sarah Dessen’s The Truth About Forever

Sarah Dessen’s The Truth About Forever is a young adult novel published by Viking in 2004. The book tells the story of a young girl, Macy, accepting a job with a catering company and making new friends.
After the death of her father, Macy spends all her time striving for perfection.  In order to help her family overcome their grief, she helps her mother, Deborah, with the only thing that keeps her motivated, her job. At one of Deborah’s work parties Macy is introduced to the chaos that is Wish Catering. Taking a leap of faith, Macy joins the mismatched crew and gradually learns how to cope with life by learning that unless she accepts herself the way she is, no one else will be able to either.
This book gives us inspiration in the most unexpected ways. The characters are all examples of what shouldn’t be perfect. Wes is a reformed rebel, Kristy is horribly scarred, Monica refuses to speak, and Deborah, like Macy, forces herself to be as perfect as possible. This is a novel all teen girls should read. Dessen’s The Truth About Forever shows you a world where perfection has flaws.
