Martin Luther King Jr Day

Martin Luther King JR. day is celebrated all across America each year since it became a federal holiday in the year 2000. MLK Day was started by a petition shortly after King was assassinated. The petition was started to get recognition for Kings Birthday because King was an icon to the African American community. He freed the African American community from racial segregation and political injustice.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday of January which is close to Kings Birthday of January 15th. MLK Day is a day of national unity. People will do community service and volunteer on the day to celebrate the day. MLK Day is also a holiday in Toronto Canada and the country of Japan.

I think it is great that Martin Luther King Jr. has his own holiday. This is just one of the many ways we can recognize what Martin Luther King Jr. did not just for African Americans but for all of America.
