Is Cheerleading Really a Sport?

What is the definition of a sport? It’s a form of competition that involves physical activity. Everyone has a different image that comes to mind when they think of the word “sport”. My personal image is cheerleading.  And I don’t mean your lousy team cheer, I mean competitive cheer.

It seems like there’s been this forever lasting debate whether cheerleading is a sport or not. Sha'Kaela (10B) says," Yes cheerleading is a sport, because in cheer we do more than other sports, like baseball." On the other hand, Saadman (9A) says," No, because it's just stretches." Well, no. It really isn't. Not only do you have to be flexible, but you need to lift people, tumble, jump, and look good dancing. All these already tiring activities are squeezed into a 2 minute, fast paced performance. Arash (10A) says," Cheer is not a sport, because it's just dancing." The day I see every "athletic" person, who thinks cheer isn't a sport, lift a 110 pound girl in full extension by one leg, I will tell you cheer isn't a sport.

Don't get me wrong, everyone is more than entitled to their opinion, but ignorant opinions are not worth hearing. Even some football players I know say cheer can be harder, sometimes. It takes just as much, if not more, dedication and effort as any other sport. Whoever thinks cheer looks easy is watching the wrong team.
