The high school social, which was going to be held on either May 4th or May 11th, has been cancelled. This cancellation was due to “lack of interest” according to Mrs. Stephens. Many students disagree with this comment though as the student voice wasn’t adequately represented.
Saadman in 9A remarked “I am very upset. I was looking forward to this event.” Others like Isabelle, also in 9A, said they were “going to go but then they changed the dress code.” Chris in 9B agreed that going also “[depended] on dress code.”
Expectations for the event weren’t very high. Students were more than willing to help though. Lizette in 10A said, “I would be very dedicated so students [would] enjoy their time.”
Although Mrs. Stephens thought student council was handling the event, Lizette, a member of student council, was astonished. When asked if student council had heard about this she replied “No. I was surprised they didn’t’ inform us of the event. Student council is made for the students to make such choices and this should have been notified to student council to plan.”
Mrs. Stephens explained that she knows “this is not an easy place to go to school,” but she also knows “it’s not an easy place to teach.”
Although the social is cancelled for this year they plan on doing something more casual for next year. There’s just “not enough time” left for this year according to Jocelyn T. in 9A.
Mrs. Stephens ended by saying, “we’re never going to have what Creekview has. Those kids are never going to have what we have, and we may never have a large prom but that’s okay. Let go of the idea that we have to have what the school down the street has.”
