The Rise and Fall of the NBA Lockout

The NBA during the 2010-2011 ended with a good note (for some) and a bad note (for all). The Dallas Mavericks won the championship with their 1st ever in their franchise, but the NBA went straight into lockout mode on July 1st. After 161 long grueling days of the lockout, the NBA and the players agreed to a 10-year agreement on December 8th, and decided to start the season with a bang having the 1st games of the year on Christmas day.

The main issues for having the lockout were that the owners and the players could not agree on the revenue and the salary cap, which means how much money would players get from ticket sales, and jersey sales. During the lockout, teams could not trade, sign or contact players, and players could not access NBA team facilities, trainers or staff members. Some players signed contracts to play in other countries, mostly in Europe and Asia, with most of those players having the option to return to the NBA upon the lockouts conclusion.

After a deal was reached between the players and the owners on December 8th, owners allowed players to have voluntary workouts at the team sites on December 10th. After the deal was ratified, training camps, trades, and free agency began the next day.
